Obviously this is just a hack until Amazon will (hopefully) add the use of custom dictionaries to their PC, Mac or Cloud reader application. I’ve adapted their code for language learning purposes (specifically German learning), so that after activating the bookmarklet you get two different options for sending selected text to either or Google Translate. So is Kindle Cloud Reader also a dead-end street if you’re trying to “click & translate” words from your Kindle books? Turns out, binarycrafts from Romania have found a way to circumvent Kindle Cloud reader’s blocking of text copying by use of a simple bookmarklet. Even purchased dictionaries from the Kindle store don’t show up here.įurthermore, Kindle Cloud Reader doesn’t allow copying of text, which is probably to prevent piracy, but also it prevents readers from looking up and translating words or using third-party browser extensions for further study, such as flashcards, etc.

Also Cloud Reader offers a handful of pre-installed dictionaries, but unfortunately there is no discernible way to install more dictionaries. In case you’re not familiar with it, Cloud Reader is a web-app that allows you to read Kindle books directly from your browser.

While trying to get Kindle PC to accept custom dictionaries ultimately proved futile, I started looking into another way to accomplish this with Kindle Cloud Reader. Cloud Reader: Not Enough Dictionaries, No Copy & Paste when reading Kindle books on your PC or Mac. What has been missing from this list so far is an option to get the same feature on desktop computers, i.e. Whether it’s on your Kindle ereader, on your iPhone or iPad Kindle app, or Kindle Android app (see links for detailed instructions), custom dictionaries can be easily integrated, so that all you need to do is tap on unknown words to get an immediate translation.

When you download the Kindle book, you will generally be told if an Audible version is available.As a language instructor and author of language learning textbooks, I’ve always found the Kindle’s built-in dictionary a great tool to make reading foreign language texts more fluid and frictionless. Not all Audible books can be linked with the Kindle version, and there are far fewer Audible versions of books than Kindle. It is a more expensive method to read books as you have to pay for the Kindle version, as well as the Audible talking book, though there is generally a discount on the price of the Audible book. In this case, text is highlighted as it is read, making it easier to follow.

Some Kindle books can be linked with Audible talking books, using ' Whispersync' to provide professional narration, usually by an actor or the author. In contrast, the iOS app has a choice of eight fonts, though some are very similar to each other. You still just have a choice between Bookerly and Georgia, two very similar serif fonts. Unfortunately, Amazon has not provided any additional font options for viewing the text with the new PC and Mac apps. In Windows 10, go to the Speech Recognition control panel, click on Text to Speech and then select a voice from those available on your computer.
To change the default voice on a Mac, click on the Apple symbol (top left of the screen), followed by System Preferences, Accessibility, then Speech to choose your System Voice. Unfortunately, the app doesn't highlight text as it is read so it can be hard for somebody with reading difficulties to follow the text, but having easy access to decent computer voices is still a significant improvement on earlier versions. Now click on Tools, then Start Text-to-Speech (or press Ctrl-T on a PC, Cmnd-T on a Mac) to start reading the book from the top of the page. Once you have installed the app on a Mac or PC, and logged into your Kindle account, click on the book that you wish to read. The Mac and Windows versions of the App are very similar, but the screenshots in this blog are taken from the Windows version. (In the case of the Apple app, you currently get version 1.12.4 from the App Store, but version 1.19.1 from Amazon.

To get the latest, free version of the app, make sure you go to the link on the Amazon web site, not the Apple or Windows App Store as the App Store versions are quite old. All this has changed with the latest versions of the apps, available from Amazon, which can easily read out text from speech-enabled books using your computer's default voice. Text to speech has been available for some Kindle book readers for a number of years, but if you wanted to add this feature to the Kindle apps for a Windows or Mac computer, this involved an incredible amount of faffing about.
